Cockapoo And Goldendoodle Breed History

The Cockapoo and the Goldendoodle are crossbreeds of the Poodle, the Cocker Spaniel and the Golden Retriever; these days, there are many other Poodle crossbreeds available. Breeders crossbreed poodles for desirable characteristics like a hypoallergenic coat, their bright intelligence, and overall friendliness, which the Goldendoodle and Cockapoo have been fortunate enough to inherit.

However, none of the major kennel clubs worldwide has yet to recognise either the Goldendoodle or Cockapoo as distinct dog breeds. This situation may change, but that scenario doesn’t look too promising to date.

Goldendoodle

The Goldendoodle probably came about because of the popularity of the Labradoodle, a relatively new mixed dog breed that emerged in the 1990s. Doodles of all kinds, including the Goldendoodle, are becoming increasingly popular in recent years. As a result, they have become one of the most sought-after Doodles in recent years. As we mentioned, hybrids are not recognised yet; however, that doesn’t deter dog lovers from wanting to own one of these beautiful dogs.

Cockapoo

Part Cocker Spaniel, part Poodle, Cockapoos have been bred in the United States since the 1960s, making them one of the earliest Poodle crossbreeds. Breeders wanted to create a dog similar in size to the Cocker Spaniel parent but one that will generally shed less and have fewer health issues.

You can expect few surprises regarding the Cockapoo’s appearance, health, and temperament as a dog owner, thanks to decades of experience breeding these dogs. The Cockapoo is undoubtedly the most popular Doodle dog.

Cockapoo Vs. Goldendoodle Appearance

Their sizes can distinguish the Goldendoodle and Cockapoo; both of these two breeds are available in several different sizes! Golden Doodles are larger dogs when compared to cockapoos.

The weight of a Goldendoodle can vary from 13 pounds to 85 pounds. In terms of size, Mini Goldendoodles fall somewhere between the Toy and Standard Goldendoodles, weighing in at 20-40 pounds on average.

Even though the Cockapoo comes in three different sizes, all of them are smaller dogs than their Goldendoodle counterparts. The Teacup Cockapoo is the tiniest of the breeds. The maximum weight for these is just 7 lbs. The Toy Cockapoo weighs between 7 to 13 lbs. The Mini Cockapoo weighs between 13-25 lbs. And the Standard Cockapoo weighs between 25-40lbs!

It’s important to remember that all of these size ranges are “unofficial” because the Goldendoodle and Cockapoo are hybrids and are not governed by any breed standard laid down by kennel clubs. It’s common for cockapoos to be smaller than Goldendoodles; they are smaller and lighter and slimmer and shorter in stature.

Coat Colours

A tan furry dog probably comes to mind when picturing the Cockapoo and Goldendoodle. Even though both dogs have a tan colour, they can also come in various hues.

Cream, apricot, red, chocolate, and black are all colour options for Goldendoodles. Cockapoos can range from white to buff to apricot to red to chocolate and black. Their coats come in a variety of patterns and solid colours.

Some of these patterns will include:

Parti – a parti-coloured Cockapoo with a white base with other colours. There can be two or more colours. 

Abstract – Cockapoos of any solid colour will have a tuxedo or abstract markings, such as a white chest.

Merle – their coats have a swirl coloured pattern.

Phantom – phantom markings are sometimes more prominent on the face, and other times they are more of a design on the body.

Coat Types

Goldendoodles can have straight, wavy, or curly coats. At the same time, Cockapoos tend to have wavy or curly texture coats. Generally, dogs with wavy or straight coats have softer and more manageable hair. Both dogs have thicker, longer coats, even though their coat lengths vary. Both dogs have a distinctively puffy appearance with their long eyebrows, moustache, and beard.

Both dogs are said to be a hypoallergenic breed; even so, no dog is 100% hypoallergenic because it’s not the hair that causes the allergens. 

There is some shedding, but it’s minimal to nonexistent, it’s nowhere near as much if you owned a Cocker Spaniels or Golden Retrievers. Cockapoos tend to shed less than Goldendoodles, but it’s a minimal amount even then.

Cockapoo Vs. Goldendoodle Grooming

Both of these mixed breeds will require frequent grooming because of the two dogs’ Poodle heritage. The more Poodle DNA they have, the more time and effort it will take to keep their coat from becoming matted.

The simplest thing to do is to brush as often as possible to avoid matting! Dogs like Goldendoodles and Cockapoos need brushing every couple of days. However, if you have an F1 doodle with a straighter coat, you may be able to brush him every 2-4 days instead. It’s also advisable to book your dog in for frequent grooming by a professional groomer once every 6 weeks or so.

Cockapoo Vs. Goldendoodle Temperament

Both the Cockapoo and the Goldendoodle are devoted and loving companions and also make excellent therapy dogs. Both of these breeds are excellent choices for a family pet, their demeanour is warm and friendly, and they look forward to meeting new people. 

These dogs are great for families with other pets or young children because they rarely display aggressive or herding tendencies. These well-behaved dogs would make terrible guard dogs because they’re far too friendly. Having said that, the Cockapoo will bark to alert you if any strangers are about your home.

Nervousness in Goldendoodles or Cockapoos is usually the result of poor breeding or socialisation practices; however, they are typically not known for having this trait.

Because they are both so family-oriented, these dogs may suffer from separation anxiety if left alone for any length of time. If you’re away from home regularly, for work, etc., looking into other dog breeds would be a better solution. 

Goldendoodle vs Cockapoo Exercise

The difference in activity levels between Goldendoodles and Cockapoos is substantial. Goldendoodles are more active than Cockapoos, but both breeds require a moderate amount of exercise.

As long as the walk lasts for at least 30 minutes, Cockapoos are content. However, both the parents need lots of exercise, so bear that in mind if you find your Cockapoo has more energy than you anticipated.

In contrast, Goldendoodles need at least an hour of daily exercise. To keep them motivated, try different types of walks, such as jogs or games of fetch. Dogs like Goldendoodles, who need mental and physical stimulation, can develop behaviour problems if they don’t get the required amount of exercise, including cognitive stimulation.

Cockapoo Vs. Goldendoodle Trainability

Because of their similar intelligence levels, there isn’t much of a difference between the Goldendoodle and the Cockapoo when it comes to trainability. Both of these dogs can quickly learn new commands. First-time dog owners may find them an appealing option because they are pretty easy dogs to train.

As a general rule of thumb, positive reinforcement training is more effective for Goldendoodles and Cockapoos (and most dogs, for that matter). Raised voices, impatience and angry tones aren’t suitable for either breed. Another thing to keep in mind is that housebreaking a Goldendoodle can take a little longer, so be prepared to be patient.

The idea of hybrid dogs came about to prevent some of the debilitating hereditary diseases of purebred dogs. While it seems to be the case to some extent, it doesn’t mean your Goldendoodle or Cockapoo are not at risk of developing health conditions.

Both dogs tend to be in reasonably good health, and you can help your pup’s health by buying from a reputable breeder because that will offer you a much better chance of obtaining a healthy dog.  

The two breeds are genetically predisposed to a variety of health issues, including:

• Luxating Patella
• Cataracts and glaucoma eye diseases, progressive retinal atrophy (PRA)
• Hip dysplasia
