How Often Should a Cockapoo Be Professionally Groomed?

One of the most important parts of owning a cockapoo, like any other dog, is grooming its coat. Although cockapoos are famous for not shedding their fur, they still moult like other dogs twice a year. Therefore it is important to stop their fur matting so that you regularly groom them. How regular is regular though? In the following post, we are going to discuss the answer to this question.

Averages Are A Guideline As All Cockapoos Are Different

If you do a Google search of the question noted in the title of this post, you will find that many sites suggest that you should have your cockapoo groomed every 3 to 4 months. This is a great suggestion for the average cockapoo. However, it would be best if you remembered that all cockapoos are different, as not cockapoos have the exact same coat. There is a lot of variety in cockapoo coats, depending on the specific characteristics they have inherited from the parent breeds, cocker spaniel and poodle.

For instance, some cockapoos have a very straight coat, while others have a loose ringlet/wavy type of coat or a tightly curled coat.

Our own cockapoo, Luna, has a wavy coat, inheriting more of the cocker spaniel fur genetics. As we’ve established, this means she does not need quite as much grooming throughout the year compared to cockapoos that have inherited more poodle fur genetics.

How Often Are You Going to Brush Your Cockapoo?

One factor that can determine how much you are going to need to have your cockapoo groomed professionally is how often you are prepared to brush its fur yourself. As we’ve already established just because cockapoos don’t shed their fur if they have tightly curled or wavy coats, they can still develop knots and tangles. You can reduce the number of times you would need to take your cockapoo to the groomers by regularly brushing out their fur.

Are you Going to Trim Your Dog Yourself?

While you may like to take your cockapoo along to the groomer for bigger clipping jobs, you may decide to do some of it yourself. Even if you have a pair of grooming scissors or electric clippers and just trim your dog when knots start to appear, you can reduce the number of times you need to go to the groomer.

That’s what we tend to do with Luna. We brush her regularly and have grooming scissors that we used to trim her fur when any knots start appearing and just keep on top of that and make sure that her tail gets a good trim as well. Therefore, compared to other cockapoo owners out there, we probably do not take Luna to the groomers as often. I think if Luna had a coat that was more like a poodle’s, we would definitely take her to a professional groomer more often.
