Javier Arístegui Ruiz


Javier Arístegui is Full Professor of Ecology and Director of the “Marine Technological Service” (SITMA) at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC), where he has being coordinating undergraduate and postgraduate courses and programmes in marine biogeochemistry and biological oceanography from 1995 until now. He has served the scientific community as organizer and convener of national and international conferences and symposia, ad-hoc reviewer for 10 national and international Science Foundations, reviewer for more than 30 international journals, co-editor-in-chief of Deep Sea Research II, associate editor of “Frontiers (Biogeochemistry)” and guest editor in “Progress in Oceanography” and “Scientia Marina”. Contributing author for the Implementation Plan of the JGOFS-Time Series Stations, the implementation Plan of the Joint SOLAS_IMBER Ocean Carbon Research Carbon Cycle, and the IPCC 5thAssessment Report. Member of the Network of Excellence Eur-Oceans, Chair of the SSC IMBER-Spain (2007-2013), and member and Vice-Chair of the SSC IMBER international programme (2007-2013). During the past 25 years he worked on the dynamics of pelagic ecosystems, including studies on plankton ecology and ecophysiology, microbial oceanography and biogeochemistry. He has published over 120 publications, coordinated 20 national and international projects, and participated in more than 30 oceanographic cruises across all major ocean basins. Together with other colleagues, he pioneered studies on the contribution of dissolved and suspended organic carbon to remineralization rates in the dark ocean, linking function to organic matter dynamics and diversity. Being based on the Canary Islands, much of his work focussed on the Eastern Boundary Upwelling System (EBUS) west of Africa, studying the influence of mesoscale and sub-mesoscale processes on community structure and metabolism, and the role that these features play in the carbon export from coastal waters to the surface and deep open-ocean.
