Will Covid-19 mean future cuts in funding for science?

An article in El Día has highlighted the fear in the scientific community that, in the wake of the Covid-19 virus, a new economic crisis could signal the freezing of funding for science. IOCAG researcher, María Dolores Pérez Hernández, emphasised that oeanographic studies may be among those most badly hit by the slump that is bound to follow the Corona virus. Having overcome one setback already this year as the result of an administrative error regarding the use of research vessels, Easter had been the new date fixed for the next oceanographic campaign around the Canary Islands. However, with hope all but gone for data collection this semester, October had been indicated as the next possibility. This, too, is now in doubt.
