Fernando Jesús Medina Morales

Fernando Medina Morales is a geographer, associate professor in the Department of Geography at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC), and a predoctoral researcher affiliated with the GEOTIGMA research group (Geography, Environment and Geographic Information Technologies), attached to the Institute of Oceanography and Global Change (IOCAG).

He holds a degree in Geography from the University of La Laguna and a Master’s degree in Governance, Sustainable Development and Environmental Management from the same university. He teaches at the Faculty of Geography and History of ULPGC. In parallel, he has more than 20 years of professional experience in emergency management and coordination, providing a strong operational and applied perspective to his research activity.

His main research lines focus on emergency management and risk management from a territorial perspective. Within this framework, he analyzes how information and communication technologies (ICT) influence the functioning of emergency coordination centers and civil protection systems, particularly in decision-making processes during crisis situations.

His work also addresses risk perception and communication, as well as the evaluation of early warning systems, with a special focus on meteorological hazards and their impact on society. Additionally, he studies the relationship between spatial planning, vulnerability, and risk exposure, especially in island environments and wildland–urban interface areas, as well as the effects of climate change on the increasing intensity of extreme events.
